Registration Open for Britt Festivals Performing Arts Camps (1-18-08)
MEDFORD, OR - The Britt Institute, Britt Festivals' educational arm, offers three camps attended by over one hundred aspiring musicians who are taught by world-class faculty. The Britt Institute hosts music camps in instrumental jazz, saxophone and string quartet academy. The camps encompass student recitals, faculty recitals, master classes, lectures and adventures. These one- and two-week camps are designed to be intensive, challenging and inspiring. The camp application deadline for the two-week String Quartet Academy to be held from July 30-August 16 is March 14, 2008. April 15, 2008 is the camp application deadline for the Instrumental Jazz Camp to be held June 22-28, 2008 as well as the Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop to be held July 6-11, 2008. The Britt Institute Instrumental Jazz Camp is for intermediate and advanced musicians ages 14-19. Tuition is $375, room/board is $375. Britt's Instrumental Jazz Camp features instruction in all aspects of jazz studies. Participants are placed in small combos and big bands based on ability and experience. No audition is necessary. Dana Landry, 2006 Grammy nominee and an inspirational jazz pianist in his own right, leads an energetic and experienced faculty, who are all masters in their field. An inspirational week of study includes training in theory, jazz history and composition with the nationally-known faculty. Students perform in big band and combo ensembles, and participate in innovative master classes. Evenings are filled with faculty performances and concerts on the Britt hill. The week concludes with two student concerts, an indoor combo concert and an outdoor big band concert. The Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop provides a unique opportunity for students to explore the challenge of saxophone quartet repertoire as well as performing in a large saxophone orchestra. Participants are placed in quartets and assigned music based on ability and experience. No audition is necessary. The faculty is led by Dr. Rhett Bender and made up of members from the Globe Saxophone Quartet, four of America's best saxophone teachers. They bring to their teaching a wealth of experience on the world's classical stages. The camp takes place on the campus of Southern Oregon University. It features faculty performances, master classes in classical and jazz methods, a student recital and performing as guests with the Ashland City Band in beautiful Lithia Park. Attending concerts at Britt Festivals and master classes with Britt Festivals' artists are an added bonus. This camp is designed for intermediate to advanced saxophonists. Middle school, high school, college and young adults are encouraged to apply. All saxophone voices (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone) are welcome. Tuition is $375, room/board is $375. The String Quartet Academy is for intermediate to advanced students aged 14-22 who want to explore the exciting and intimate world of chamber music. Special permission is required from the faculty for students under 14. Tuition is $775, room/board is $850. The Arianna String Quartet is the faculty quartet-in-residence. Hailed for its outstanding musicianship, the Arianna String Quartet has firmly established itself as one of America's finest chamber ensembles—Grand Prize winner in the 1994 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition; First Prize winner in both the Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions; Laureates in the 1999 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition; appointed as Artist Teachers and Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Missouri-St. Louis; awarded Chamber Music America Residency Grants in 1996 and 2003 for their innovative educational programs; received the Missouri String Teacher Association's Distinguished Service Award in 2005 for their outstanding contributions to music education and the cultivation of young audiences. The Arianna String Quartet has designed a curriculum that challenges every aspect of their students' musicianship. Activities include daily ensemble rehearsals, coaching sessions, master classes, private lessons, score study and performance opportunities. Students are challenged to expand their technique and musicianship in ways that will change their approach to music forever, compelling them to become more expressive and creative performers. Auditions are required. Established in 1985, the Britt Institute also provides year-round learning opportunities through pre-concert lectures, its model program "Music in the Mornings," workshops and artist residencies.
