Who is Ingrid Fliter? A young Argentinean pianist, Fliter (pronounced "Fleeter") possesses physical beauty and extraordinary rapport with both orchestra and audience. In addition to impeccable technique, she is an artist capable of developing and transmitting the most subtle nuances of Chopin. She creates magic through all Chopin's Romantic melodies, both soaring and whispering. Silver medalist at the 2000 Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Ms. Fliter was recipient of the coveted 2006 Gilmore Artist Award (made to an exceptional pianist who is recognized as capable of sustaining a career as a major international concert artist). She made her major American orchestra debut in January of 2006 with the Atlanta Symphony and is in demand by major orchestras throughout the world.
After intermission, the orchestra will perform excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet Suites, originally composed for the Kirov Ballet in 1936. Music from the ballet was extracted by the composer into three orchestral suites of great passion and beauty. For all his commitment to Modernism, Prokofiev never forgot that he was writing for an audience. He used beautiful melodies to give life to all the characters in this dramatic storytelling. The excerpts you'll hear show how a great composer shaped character, communicated emotion and captured the dramatic sweep of one of the world's great love stories.
