Britt Institute Celebrates the Britt Classical Festival with a Quartet on Every Corner (8-5-08)

JACKSONVILLE, OR — The Britt Institute's String Quartet Academy celebrates the 46th Britt Classical Festival with a quartet on every corner in downtown historic Jacksonville on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Tickets or reservations are not required.

There will be a total of 10 quartets each comprised of four students—two violins, one viola and one cello. The students perform pieces composed by Joseph Haydn, the "Father of the String Quartet."

One of the only camps in the nation that focuses solely on string quartet repertoire, Britt Institute's String Quartet Academy offers intermediate to advanced students between the ages of 14 and 22 a comprehensive musical education. The special training and expertise of the faculty, The Arianna String Quartet, challenges young musicians to expand their technique and musicianship in ways that will change their approach to music forever.

Out of 81 students who auditioned to participate in the academy, 39 students from across the nation and three international students were accepted to attend the camp this year. There are six students representing the Rogue Valley. Due to the generosity of Britt donors and patrons, over $20,000 in scholarships have been provided to students attending this camp. The String Quartet Academy camp runs from July 30 to Aug. 16, 2008.

The students will be showcasing their skills at two other performances:
•    String Quartet Academy Connoisseur Concert—Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Skyline Plaza at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford. This concert is available to residents of the Manor.
•    String Quartet Academy Final Recital—Part One will be performed Saturday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. and Part Two follows at 2 p.m. Both parts will be at the Southern Oregon University Recital Hall in Ashland. This concert is free and open to the public.

Established in 1985, the Britt Institute also provides year-round learning opportunities through pre-concert lectures, its model program "Music in the Mornings," workshops and artist residencies. For more information about these summer camps and The Britt Institute, visit Britt on the web at www.brittfest.org or call 541-779-0847 or 1-800-882-7488. Britt's office is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday at 216 West Main St. in Medford.

Now in its 46th year, Britt Festivals is a non-profit organization that presents and sponsors performing arts and supports those activities through on-going education and audience development programs, and through cooperation with educational, civic, cultural, and governmental organizations in southern Oregon.
